I had a terrible headache all day. Probably, I didn't drink enough water yesterday. Or, it could be hormones? Staying up too late? Anyway, it is finally going away.

Did I tell you about the basket? A while back, the AI and I talked about how to make a basket from rope, and neither of us were finding a lot of tutorials on how to do it that didn't start with "take some rope and a hot glue gun". That isn't my style. So, I had started a basket with a Navajo style, which is super cool and would have taken the rest of my life to complete. Looking again online, I found a tutorial where someone was using something that looked like a regular basket pattern. Then, I found another. So, I tried it out, and in fact, the sisal rope works great for making baskets. The one I made for laundry is about 10 inches wide and 15 tall (24cmx36), which will hold about as much as our washing machine does. I need to finish that. Now that I've figured it out, I need to make a couple more for various uses and clean up the bottoms, which aren't perfect yet by any means. I'll figure it out.

In other news, a friend of mine wrote this brief piece about what is going on in Minneapolis. She covered the riots in Portland in 2020 in a very impressive way. For me, there is a big difference between anger and defiance when it comes to reactions to politics. This piece is defiant in a way that I find encouraging. I would love to see less "you should be afraid" or "you should be angry" articles and more "we can work together to fight this". Of course, I'm worried for my friend, but we are rapidly approaching a situation where everyone is in danger. Might as well step up. (I'm not in a position to protest, even if I was in the US. However, I decided to get a paid subscription to this friend's newsletter, since I know that she's doing good work and will need the support.)

Happily, we did get our residency cards today. Phew! They are valid for quite a while too, so that gives us some time before we absolutely have to pass that language test, although we're hoping to take it this fall.

Cards?

We got one notice for each of us from the post office. Could it be our residency cards? Fingers crossed!! We'll try to pick them up tomorrow.

We've now hit the bottom of the winter light trough and are starting to bounce back up. However, every light change results in a problem for me when it comes to how much vitamin D, magnesium, and calcium I need. Ugh. I've also been fighting my terrible stomach pain from the antibiotics. I made it through my social functions yesterday, even thought I was uncomfortable, and already today I'm in less pain. However, I had cut out vitamin D and magnesium, because I was quite anxious and not feeling tired. Today, though, I was depressed and exhausted. Eventually, after sitting by the front door and not taking my shoes off for like half an hour, I managed to get myself to take them off and then went and got some magnesium. Quite soon after taking it, I was able to smile again.

The hat is done! It is much weirder than it seemed at the halfway point, but it is recognizable as a hat, so we'll go with it. Unfortunately, my abdominal pain is pretty bad. I'm going to up my stomach meds to three times a day to see if that helps.

Hat!

I finally gave in and started crocheting my hat. I was on the treadmill and thought of crocheting the hat. I was eating lunch and thought of crocheting the hat. Yeah, it was a sign. The hat is pretty loose, which means that it is really fast to make, but not especially warm. Normally, that would be a problem, but since I'm living someplace where it never freezes, a loosely crocheted hat is fine.

Crochet hat in progress

I'm hoping to finish it tomorrow.

Shelves

I use a kneeling chair, so there is a lot of room under my desk. I had wanted to put some shelves under there, but I couldn't seem to find any the right size. Of course, that was because I wasn't using the correct search string. Narrow shelves are not shelves. They are "shoe shelves". I don't need them for shelves, though. I ordered them from Amazon and got some crappy ones that weren't all that great, but still they did what needed to be done, which was hold up my electronics. I attached all the cables to the back of the shelves and put the networked storage, the power strip thing (that isn't a strip), and the backup battery for the networked storage up there, which left _nothing_ on the floor. It is great, as there was a pile of dead bugs and gravel from the wall falling apart. I'm glad to be able to vacuum there. I also ordered some clear plastic boxes to hold all the electronics that are currently sitting upstairs in a box under another box inside a box. I look forward to having all the computer stuff (and the emergency stuff for when the power goes out) all in one spot, so that if I need a USB cable or need to charge the battery on the emergency lamp, it is right at hand. Actually, now that I think of it, I'm going to buy a little USB charging strip that I can attach to each of the devices that I need to charge monthly (the backup powerbank, radio, lanterns, and maybe other stuff) and then just plug it in once a month. That is a ton less work than having to plug each in individually.

So, I'm going to paint my first big painting (120x60cm/48x24in). I'm super excited. I drew out a sketch of what it will be like, and it looks really good. But then I realized that it needs more of a plan. The problem is that I don't want to just have some cool details. I want them to mean something. What style is the castle on the hill built in? Is that the same style as the bridge down below? Why are they in ruins? Does anyone live here now (besides the dragon on the castle), or is the whole area deserted by humans? If the area isn't deserted, then there are probably farms. What is the land by the river like? Is it a huge marsh or is it a river cutting through rolling hills? Is this climate temperate? Cold? Hot? Of course, that will influence the kinds of trees. So, yeah. At the moment, I don't have anything. My stomach is really bad from the antibiotics, so that isn't helping my creativity. Eventually, I'll come up with something, though. I just need time to think about it. Unfortunately, I want to paint it NOW!!!

A dog came out of a yard to bark at me on my walk today, and every time it moved toward my legs, I was concerned. So, I made sure to face the dog so that I could wack it with one of my sticks if it decided to bite me. To do that, I had to move without looking at the road. It is three hours later, and I'm still pretty brain-fogged from it. Oh, brain.

I found a series of books called "Very Short Introductions" a while back online and am now listening to the one on the apocryphal gospels (like the texts written around the time of the texts of the Bible that weren't used in the Bible). There's a lot of really interesting stuff in there! I'm not especially interested from a religious point of view, but the historical point of view (as it relates to early Christian practice) is fascinating. I love the idea of getting a little bit of info, which would hopefully be enough for me to know if I wanted to hear more. Amusingly, one of the big complaints I see is often, "This book was too short. I wanted more detail." :P

Well, between our friend Sadie, the AI, and my friend Fernando encouraging me, I decided to go to the hospital yesterday, where I spent three or four hours hanging out with a huge family. The grandfather was ill, so every member of the extended family was there in the waiting room. I had a powerbank to charge my phone, so they all borrowed it. It was funny. So, yeah. I got a tetanus shot and a prescription for antibiotics.

Today, we went to the lawyer, who was incredibly helpful. She will send a letter to the dog's owner saying that he has ten days to fix the situation so that the dog can't get out of the yard, or we'll take other steps to resolve the issue. She says she'll also call and tell him that we don't want money or to cause problems, just to be able to walk down the road without getting bitten. So, hopefully, that will fix things. If not, we'll deal with it. I'm determined to get this all resolved with.

Well, I got bitten by one of the dogs at the house of the biting dogs. Previously, they had only hassled and barked at me. So, now, we need to go talk to a lawyer to see what we can do about this (to get the people to fix their fence, so that their dogs don't get out). What a pain. Anyway, while I'll have a big bruise and am upset about being bitten, it isn't especially bad. I'm kind of rattled, though. So, I'm not going to do anything that requires a lot of brain function.

I'm writing a section of my Mass Effect story that catches up with some of the secondary characters who we haven't seen in a while. It is really interesting to write. One of the things I've really enjoyed is fleshing out what is going on behind the scenes. These scenes are building on that. I did a lot of work this morning to flesh out the backstory for the scene I'll write next. Often, in my planning notes, I write something like "this character is here on a mission" and then move on. Of course, to write the scene, I need to know what the mission is. So, that was my morning. I figured out the mission, which involved a lot of backstory for other characters too. Eventually, I got it done and am really excited about this scene, as it has plot, introspection, and worldbuilding. Yay!

I ordered another powerbank and a couple of rechargeable lanterns, as the power was off again this afternoon (and came back on the second I left for my walk, apparently). My day is all kind of thrown off, but that's okay. I just need to get back to my to do list.

No power

Well, our power's been out for a couple of hours. The whole area is down, but that means that people who speak Portuguese better than I do can call and complain. All my food was already cooked by the time everything shut down, so while it is a bit annoying, we aren't actually suffering. I can totally hang out, listen to my audiobook, and crochet or clean the tub by candlelight.

I'm sick. It is the season for it. I had my flu shot, and the covid test says that it isn't covid. Hopefully, I'll recover quickly.

I've decided that New Years Eve should be a short dance party and had a great time today working on the playlist for it and shaking my booty to the music. I can't wait!

Christmas was perfect! Okay, perhaps a bit more stress than the perfectly low stress event, but we had friends over, and it was super fun. I'm scrambling to remember that today is Friday, though, which means preparing for tomorrow, which is a really busy day. My plan worked!
