I went on the writing retreat, and it was just lovely. I had a great time with friends and did a lot of work on a short story that I'll read at a scary Christmas story reading. It needs a bit more tweaking to be entirely comprehensible, but I'm pretty happy with it. It is so short that I was just able to copy and paste the whole thing into the chat window for my chosen AI and discuss what it thought the story was about and what I could do to make it more clear. I could make dozens of revisions, and the AI doesn't have any problem with reading each one of them and commenting. It is so nice! It doesn't always have the perfect suggestions, but it helps, especially with "which words did I repeat too often".

By the time I got home, I was so talked out, so I shoved the laundry in the washing machine and played like 4 hours of Green Hell, which is a kind of survival/tech tree game. I had been really struggling to get new tech tree branches to open up, but while I was looking for Brazil nuts (on Friday before the retreat), I spotted a location that I was supposed to visit. Then, while I was on the retreat, I realized what I needed to do to transport water more quickly. So, when I got home, I implemented my water plan, which worked great and enabled me to get so much more done (I had been carrying a single coconut half one at a time to the fire to boil water, but I replaced that with using a whole coconut, which had been for clean water, to carry dirty water to the fire to fill four coconut bowls at once). I also went and visited the village that I spotted on Friday, and that opened up a bunch of things I had been waiting on, like a map, meat dryer, and a fire pit. Plus, I found another coconut, so now I can carry twice as much water, and Brazil nuts. I can use their shells for mixing paint or making a bobber for a fishing pole, which I think will then let me create a fishing trap. Now that I'm doing a bit better in the game, I'm enjoying it a bit more.

A game developer who I really like just put out this little game. It is free and pretty short (and about faeries). It is cute, fun, and worth playing.

So much

We've decided not to have a New Years roleplaying one-shot, because Joel is stressed from all the time pressure and stuff we have to do. That's fine. We can see if we feel like doing it next year.

Today, we went up to the house and chipped paint off the upstairs walls. When we had gotten all the loose bits off, Joel went downstairs to chip off more paint, while I cleaned upstairs. Then, I tested the varnish on a clean, dry patch. It didn't bead up, which was trial number one. Tomorrow, I'll see if it dried clear. Also, I need to test if it adhered well. If it did, I'll sand a couple of spots that need it, clean the whole floor again, and then varnish the whole floor. Happily, I had enough time to sweep and then mop the downstairs too. It will get dirty again, but it is really nice to have our house not completely filthy.

I ordered an electric sander (a random orbital sander, for those who care) and a bunch of sanding disks, so that I can sand the stairs and varnish them at some point. They really need it. The sander won't come for a bit, though, which is fine. I don't need to do this part now.

I had thought about trying to get the soil samples boxed up and sent to the place that will do the testing. However, now I think that it would be smarter to walk past the shipping place to see if it is open. Then, I can go on Thursday morning before we go to work on the new house.

And I'm sick. So, I'm even more tired than usual. However, I've started playing Baldur's Gate 3, which is fun.

One-shot

We had a good time with the Christmas-themed one-session roleplaying game. I need to make a few changes to how I make one-shots in the future, but I have a plan. I'm super tired, so it is time for bed.

The people who will probably install our solar water heater got back to us _immediately_. That is just unheard of. Also, it was after 5pm. :O Anyway, it looks like we will probably get more than I had originally expected, as if we get solar panels and batteries that the solar panels can charge, then we can head toward cutting out most of our electricity cost. This isn't totally decided yet, but we are working on it.

In other news, I have paid for ChatGPT4 for a month. So far, the actual ChatGPT part doesn't seem any different or more helpful than GPT3.5. However, the interface with DALL-E, the image generator, is a million times better than what Bing has. My goal was to get an image of a character from one of my fanfic stories in a fancy, silver and blue jumpsuit for her wedding. (White is about purity, which is pretty outdated and will be even more so in 200 years.) I had a ton of trouble getting the Bing interface to DALL-E 3 to not make images for me of emaciated women with enormous boobs and really wide hips. It was so annoying. The ChatGPT4 interface was much easier to use, as I could ask it to make little changes without having to fiddle around with the exact prompt, like "make her boots more practical and comfortable" or "make the jumpsuit out of jacquard fabric or velvet".

I still haven't had time to work on painting, which is annoying. However, I am working my way through all the stuff that needs to be done. Tomorrow, we'll head up to the new house again. I'll probably work on cutting back all the toxic shrubbery.

Oh, and I discovered the band Ghost recently (see video example). It is like 80's hair metal/hard rock with a Finnish death metal aesthetic. I like that there is no screaming or growling, and that the music is surprisingly bright and upbeat for how dark it looks like it should be. I saw one of their songs recommended in connection with an amazing free romance game, A Date With Death, in which (not surprisingly from the name) you hassle the grim reaper in a chatroom and over video calls.

Not surprisingly, I am feeling a bit unproductive today. It will take a while to get everything sorted out with jet lag. However, despite feeling not so great, I did get some things done.

This morning, I started a new game called "Eastshade", which seems to be about painting. So far, it is okay. I'm not super into it, but I may find it more compelling later.

I worked on the roleplaying game. I now know who the antagonist is and how the game will start. I need to set up things a bit more to get from the beginning to an ending. I'll have more time than I expected, though, since one of the players was exposed to covid, so we'll wait for the required time to make sure she is okay.

While I didn't plan on doing it today, I painted the symbol for another of the drawers on the hutch. It didn't turn out exactly like I expected, but I think it is just fine.

(It is the middle drawer.)

If I have no idea where things are on a map, I often get very very confused. I'm working on the story about Perseus, but, not knowing where the Greek cities and islands are in relation to each other, I was very confused. So, this evening, I spent some time working on roughly drawing a map of where things were in ancient Greece. I'm not done, but even the little I have done has helped a lot.

Speaking of writing, I really want to write some interactive fiction where the reader plays Brites de Almeida. She is a character from Portuguese history. One of the women who will play in the one-shot that I'm running is playing a character based on her. I think this would make an awesome story, because she seems very dynamic and had some crazy adventures.

I don't know if I posted this before, but I did a little cross stitched frog for my niece. It is small, so it didn't take terribly long (I did it while watching the Super Bowl). I'm very pleased with it.

Now, it is time to head to bed in hopes that I'll make some progress on my jet lag.

I hadn't intended to take on any new responsibilities. However, today in the writers group, a guy who is interested in Dungeons and Dragons was really giving me the "please run a game for me" puppy dog eyes without actually asking (so, in a very nice way, but I could tell he wanted someone to show him how it works). So, I said that I would be willing to run a one-shot. He was so excited! I will do this on Tuesday. It will be short and mainly focused on showing the players how Dungeons and Dragons works. Because it will be on the day of carnival, I'm going to say that the characters are going to a feast, like the Feast of Fools. They will decorate a wagon for the parade (like a float). Then, fairies will crash the parade and cause chaos. The players will have to defeat the fairies/return them to their realm/convince them to go away. I'm hoping that they will be invested in protecting their wagon, since they spent a lot of time on it. Also, they can use things on the wagon to help defeat the fairies. At least, this is my plan for now.

I've been playing a couple of my romance games pretty much constantly. I get sick of some of the other ones, but these just never get old. However, I think it might be good to play through some of the other games I own once in a while (and look at some of the games I own but haven't played), so I made up some lists on Steam with all the games I want to replay in them. Hopefully, this will help me at least enjoy the games I have and perhaps also encourage me to play some of the new ones. It also got me to go through the other game launchers I have and figure out which games I own from places other than Steam. I love StarCraft, for example, so I will be glad to get it into the rotation again.

I can't say if today was super productive, as I think I spent most of the day being really anxious, so I don't remember it all that clearly. I think. Anyway, I went for a walk in the rain and finished up (finally) all the music that I had downloaded in the last batch for the podcast. I think it may have taken me longer than usual to get through the whole batch, as I lost a lot of my ratings from when we were in the US over the summer. I spent some time getting the 15GB of new music that I have downloaded since I started listening to the last batch imported into my music player and organized. It is always fun at the beginning of a new batch, because I suddenly get to listen to so much new music.

In other news, all the drawers for the computer hutch have the vertical edges covered in paper and all the edges on the inside on the bottom. Now, I just need to deal with the top edges (where you can see the cut cardboard) and any touch-ups. After that, it's cabinet doors and then decorative elements. I think I can get through most of the decorative elements pretty quickly, as a lot of them are just simple alchemical symbols (like oxygen or vinegar), planetary symbols (we all know the ones for Mars and Venus, for example, since those are the ones we use for male and female), or other simple designs (eye and pyramid, for example). However, at least the sphinxes will be a lot of work (probably). I am considering putting them in after most of the other parts are done, so that I am actually able to use the hutch sometime soon.

I finished two pairs of compression socks, which means I was able to throw away two pairs that were falling apart. I'll cut another couple of pairs out tomorrow, which will give me enough so that I'm not wearing ones with holes anymore. After that, it is a new pair of underwear or two (I think probably two, since it will be pretty quick that way). I'm more concerned about making the shirt and hoodie, since I had to draft a new shirt pattern, and I'm sure it will need adjustments (which isn't the fun part). The hoodie pattern isn't mine, so I'm also a bit nervous about that one too. However, looking at it makes me at least feel enthusiastic about wearing it.

I was getting a bit annoyed with playing the same games over and over (as I do), so I started up Cyberpunk 2077, which I bought when it was on sale but hadn't played at all. So far, at least, it seems very detailed and well-made (despite all the problems when it first came out). My biggest complaint is that it isn't detecting that I use a left-handed mouse (although I actually have two mice, so that I can have a scroll wheel, since my trackball doesn't have one) and the controls are awkward for using a mouse with the left hand. That's fine, though. I'm playing it on the easy mode, as I totally don't care about the fighting.

Anyway, now it is very late, so time for bed.

I felt kind of off all day today (although I was also happy about the shower drain working all day too, especially since the bathroom hasn't smelled like sewage all day). I keep thinking that there is something I'm supposed to be doing. Then, I look at my list and see that there isn't anything that I have to do. Then, I think about how I don't work and feel anxious/stressed/guilty about it. Probably, I'm putting too much pressure on myself to get things done. I suppose it could be that I'm feeling more like doing things but am still limited by my ability to cope with doing things.

In less stressful news, I used the sewing machine today, and it worked pretty well. I've been having a good time playing a new game too (Changeling).
