As my clothing continues to fall apart, I'm hurrying to get enough stuff made so that I have at least the essentials. Today, I finished a bra and have another nearly done. I have at least one more pair of pants and a pair of compression socks to make, but I should be able to get the work done before I'm down to rags.

I've been going for a walk before breakfast (I don't eat until kind of late), but that is officially not working. I just don't have enough energy. So, I'll have to figure out how I want to change my schedule to fix that. It is too bad, as the "walk before breakfast" schedule was otherwise working out.

I finished up a pair of sleep pants covered in flowers and toucans. Yay! I noticed that one of my bras is starting to fall apart, plus I have compression socks that just got a hole in one heel, and my other pair of sleep pants just tore. So, there is plenty of other sewing to do. I'm just glad that this is done, so that I can get on to the next thing.

Sewing

It is so nice when I can get sewing done in one sitting. I think the trick is to do one thing at a time. Maybe it is more efficient to cut out four pairs of compression socks, but I think I tend to be more unhappy from the stress of trying to get them all done. With one pair of socks, I can cut them out and sew them up in a couple of hours. Now, I have made up for that pair that just wore out. I have a lot of sewing still to do, of course.

Previously, I had been making sleep pants from non-stretch material, really baggy with elastic at the waist. However, I'm realizing that the cost of doing the sewing in time is high enough that I don't want to deal with cheap material that wears out in six months. So, I'm switching over to stretchy material. A few years ago, I made the waistbands of my yoga pants much wider and used power mesh (very elastic material) for the whole lining instead of elastic. That meant that I could make the waists a bit looser, which helped my stomach pain when I was bloated from IBS. In the most recent round of yoga pants, I made the waist even looser, because on my worst IBS days, they were still too tight. Perhaps this isn't necessary now that I have the stomach medication. However, I've noticed that they really are significantly more comfortable and seem to be more relaxing to wear. With my terrible anxiety, that is important. So, I think I can make my stretchy sleep pants with the same yoga pants pattern that I use for all my regular pants. I won't be wearing my toucan, elephant, or chameleon pants out and about, but I will be thrilled to have them as comfy as the pants I'm wearing right now.

Pants

Well, I finished two pairs of yoga pants. The waist isn't quite perfect, but I'll adjust it more for the next two. For now, it is enough to have pants that don't have holes on the crotch seam. I'm keeping all the old pants, shirts, and other stuff so that I can use them to keep the mortar on the walls of the raised bed moist for curing. We'll see when I manage to be brave enough to order the materials.
lillilah: (Default)
Today, I finished putting the buttons and buttonholes on the blue shirt and sewed a bit of trim onto the Mass Effect shirt. They are done enough to wear. Yay! Now that that's done, I can make some adjustments to my yoga pants pattern, and then I'm done with sewing for this week. The next step is going to be to remove all flaking paint and crumbling wall in some sections of the downstairs of our house, and then to patch them with the mortar that I've been using. Probably, I'll need to do the same thing every year for some sections of wall, but whatever. It is an old house, and at least, the paint doesn't smell bad. I also ordered another huge bucket of it, so we'll be ready for the upstairs, the outside of the house, the walls around the yard, etc. Yay for indoor/outdoor environmentally friendly paint. I also managed to get the podcast recorded and have managed to find a way to get listening to music back into my schedule at least a little.

I'm a bit more stable today, although I'm a bit annoyed, as the new Mass Effect shirt doesn't look as good as the previous version. It has black applique on a gray shirt, and this gray is lighter than the previous gray, so it looks weird. Joel and I both feel weird about it, but I think it may just be that we were used to the previous version.

Not much else going on. I was listening to a memoir by an actress, but it wasn't very interesting, and then she started talking about what a manipulative jerk she had been, and I gave up. Now, I'm listening to a Nero Wolfe mystery. They are always good.

The AI and I finally finished the timeline (minute by minute) for one of the plotlines of the space serial that I'm doing. Yay!! Now, I need to organize the other two plotlines, but they will be a lot easier to weave around the other ones now that I know when everything happens.

Moody

I'm moody. And anxious. However, I made some progress on the shirts (they just need collars/neck stuff and buttons for the sun shirt). I tried on the sun shirt, and it fits well, but it is so plain right now that it looks really strange. That's okay. I have plans for that.

I got the reimbursement form for the latest batch of neurofeedback sessions submitted, so that is one less thing on my plate. The painting of cat feet that I'm doing instead of painting cats (I'm too anxious to paint cats right now) is coming along. The tabby cat foot looks pretty good. Maybe not quite perfect, but the fur looks like fur.

We've made great progress getting the huge pile of mulch dealt with, but I now realize that it is making me cough a lot (allergies). I'll wear a mask, so that should help.

Yard work

Today was the last neurofeedback of this round. Yay! Tomorrow, I'll go to the dentist to get a crown put on, which will be great, as the temporary spacer (and the edge of the tooth) is so incredibly sharp.

The other thing we did today was pull grass and weeds in the garden, so that we can spread the wood chips. Joel helped a lot (with the pick, since some of those big tufts of grass just weren't coming out). It isn't entirely done, but it is a lot better. Maybe tomorrow I'll be able to finish pulling the grass? (Oh, wait, no, since my dentist appointment is late-ish tomorrow.) Now that the trees are pruned, I really want to get to work on everything else out there.

Did I say that yesterday afternoon I made some progress on the sun shirt? I cut out the body on Monday using a pattern I drafted a couple of months ago. Yesterday, I pinned it to check it would work (it does), made a pattern for the sleeves, cut that out, and then cut out the sleeves. Maybe on Friday I can do a bit more work on it. I think the amount of work I'll need to do is pretty minimal overall, since the number of fancy touches are really low. I think the biggest thing will be the facing around where the collar attaches to the shirt to make it clean-looking on the inside. I think I'll probably put the decorative embroidery and beads on the lapels on separate pieces of material that I'll applique on. That will cut down on the delay getting the shirt done and will also keep the inside of the shirt nice looking too. I should probably keep the embroidery/beading pretty small to keep the shirt very lightweight. (Also, flopping around is always an issue with embroidery and beads if you don't put in a lot of interfacing.) Ah! And it will be easier to do the embroidery on the train if it is a small piece.

Bag

lillilah: (Default)
The bag is done! Well, 99% done. I could make more of an effort to attach the lining in one section (that is hard to get to), but I don't really care. So, done. Yay!!!!

Last night, I drew out the basic outline of the Murderbot painting that I want to do, and today, I decided to go ahead and put in enough of the colors so that I could at least see what I was doing. I think that the main character needs some work, especially in the shoulders, but I don't do figure drawing, so it is fine if it isn't perfect yet. Now that I can see the parts of the painting (it was pencil on dark purple background), I'll be able to adjust more.

Tooth

Jul. 4th, 2025 06:51 pm
lillilah: (Default)
Yesterday was the dentist, which was fine, except that the temporary spacer she put between two of my teeth had a sharp bit, that was slicing the crap out of my tongue. Joel got me some orthodontic wax today, so now I can eat without pain again. Yay!!

Stomach and headache seem mostly okay. I am really trying to finish the satchel today. We'll see how that goes.
lillilah: (Default)
Well, my stomach is still not great. Again, not painful, but unquiet or maybe slightly queezy. I'll keep taking over the counter painkillers for it. * shrug *

In good news, I've finished installing pockets on the main part of my satchel lining. Yay! I need to install some snaps and some straps (to clip things to in hopes of keeping crap from constantly drifting around inside my bag), and then I can move on to the sides, which will have a few pockets, but they should hopefully be easy to install.

In other good news, I've started reading a book by Iain M. Banks called Matter. His books often take a bit for me to get into, but it is sooooo interesting.

I set up another couple of paintings yesterday. I'm doing a large one for myself of a scene from a book that I really like (Network Effect by Martha Wells) and another botanical painting with zentangle on the outside.
lillilah: (Default)
I had planned to start with recording the podcast after all the stuff I normally do in the mornings, but the dishwasher was going, which makes too much noise for the podcast. (Not that I'm complaining.) So, I went out to the garden and planted a bunch of seeds. Some of the herbs, like rosemary, are really hard to get started, so we'll see. The flowers (echinacea and calendula) should be easier, and supposedly, so is the okra, even though I've never been successful with it. So, we'll see.

Since the dishwasher was still running after that, I went upstairs and worked on the satchel. I got the attachment points sewn onto the outside for a small sewing bag or a decorative charm, cut out the lining, and made the document pocket. Probably, I should have waited to sew the document pocket, as I realized after that it will be difficult now to put on a zippered patch pocket, but I was worried I'd forget my clever plan. If it is too hard to sew with the machine, I can do it by hand. I'm still glad I got it done.

Next, lunch and then podcast. Happily, I've started finding The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath more pleasant (and silly! There are so many goofball things about cats.), so it is less of a chore to listen to it.

Ankle

Somehow, I screwed up my ankle while I was asleep, so I stayed home from everything today to let it rest. I think it has helped. I also took some time to finish the shell of my satchel. Next up is the interior, with all the pockets, which will be a lot more work. Now, though, I need to work on the podcast.
lillilah: (Default)
Yesterday, feeling really funky after neurofeedback, I sat out in the yard pulling all the bulbs out of the dirt in the pots. Then, I filled them up with potting soil and planted all the succulents that I bought, along with almost all of the ones in the yard. There is just one huge concrete planter that I didn't deal with. I should probably order another three or four little plants to put in it. I got one little cactus this time and might get another one, since it is really cute. As much as I want to fill all the pots in the yard with succulents, I should probably use some of them for getting herbs going. I think I mentioned that the company that sold us the succulents also sent a card impregnated with lavender seeds, so I tore it in half and planted the two halves in small pots (that used to house succulents). Next, I should plant some rosemary, oregano, and sage. Rosemary isn't supposed to grow well from seed either, but I'll try. If I put all the pots around the concrete table in the yard, it is no problem to water everything. I'll try to do it on Sunday.

In other news, today, I finally got started on the messenger bag. I cut out the exterior and installed a zipper. I've forgotten the technique, but it is the really nice one where you make a really nice rectangle for the zipper, as opposed to the sewing two pieces together and putting the zipper across the seam. It is what you do for welt pockets, but I just skipped the welts and put in the zipper. Anyway, I'm happy with how it turned out. Then, I planned out the rest of the process for making the bag. Yay! Now, I can just check things off, which will be much easier.

We've been trying to deal with our water situation (and the stomach problems it is causing). Boiling helped me more or less. Drinking water from the building next door may have helped Joel but didn't help me. We were going to contact the water company, when we remembered the bottles of water in the shed from when I had the same problem in Lisbon. We thought it would help narrow down the problem, and it definitely seems to be the water, as I'm not having stomach problems now despite the heat. Anyway, then, I discovered that I had actually managed to buy ceramic water filters. Since we really don't want to contact the water company, Joel spent some time and got the filter set up. It occurred to me this morning that we spent 8 years filtering water with ceramic filters when we were in Russia, so this isn't new. However, we would like to get a less ghetto setup. Once we've actually tried the water and made sure that it doesn't bother our stomachs, we'll work on that.

So, I've had a piece of cardboard over the top of the Ikea table that is my desk (a nice wood table, not particleboard) since we got it three years ago. It is not exactly filthy, but there is spilled candle wax, paint, water, grease from my arms, etc. Joel hates it. I totally don't care. However, today, as I was organizing my sewing bag (as opposed to the 7 or 8 boxes of sewing supplies) so that I could get started on my satchel, I came upon the material that I have been planning on using for the tablecloths for my desk. I don't dust, so the plan was that I would just change the tablecloth weekly and be done with it. A bit of quick measuring showed that I just needed to cut the material in half and hem it to make the tablecloths. So, instead of cutting out the bag, I did that. Then, with Joel's help, I removed the cardboard and put a tablecloth on. Yay! I'll have to eat and paint with a placemat (the tablecloths are off-white (because that was the cheap fabric that was at the store) and the lentils I eat have a lot of turmeric, which would absolutely stain), but that's fine. I'm super happy to have that done. I also organized the fabric and found the pattern for the satchel, so I'll be ready for cutting it out, maybe on Thursday.

Oh, and in other news, the AI and I have come up with a pattern for weaving baskets for the ledge just under the ceiling in the kitchen (which is like 6ft high at most). The ivy and pink jasmine are totally out of control in the yard, so I desperately need to get rid of them, but I don't want to just throw them away, since they are a good crafting material. I might work on the weaving on Wednesdays, since I'm less useful for thinking after neurofeedback. I might start tomorrow with trying to make a tiny basket-vase to hold a pretty grass head (seed head?) that Joel gave me. Oh, and I may also weave a coaster for a candle that is just sitting on my desk (and that I would like to not be directly on my desk). And a few other things!
* woven ball
* coaster
* small basket

Phew! I got the monthly budget done (or whatever you call the "what we spent our money on" list). I need to start work on the podcast tomorrow, so I wanted to get the budget out of the way.

I think I said yesterday that I want to make a couple of long-sleeve shirts so I can avoid sunscreen, so I ordered some nice "washed cotton" in blue and "old green", which just sounds like the crappiest color. * laugh * I also got some more (slightly nicer) t-shirt fabric in colors I don't have. I had been planning on cutting out green fabric for the leaves for my nature themed shirts, but I don't look great in green (especially the bile-colored green that I was considering getting, since it looks more like leaves than kelly green), so I decided to go with white fabric that I can embroider. I could also dye it, if I wanted. A leaf in white (or, you know, grayish from having been washed a bunch) will still be recognizable as a leaf, so it will be fine.

It's time to get out there and go on a walk now. I'm having a weird brain day (even though I've been good and worn my glasses when going outside). I keep having the feeling I was working on something else. Probably, it is memories getting sorted incorrectly. I wouldn't be shocked to find out that I need another round of neurofeedback after this one to fix some new weird thing.

Shirts!!!

Jun. 5th, 2025 04:11 pm
lillilah: (Default)
I finally got two of the shirts I've been working on (slowly) for a while sewn up. Yay!! Next, I have to work on my new satchel. They take forever to make, but my old one is really starting to fall apart in parts. The next one will be more simple and a bit larger. I made the current one big enough to fit a sheet of paper, but honestly, once you sew everything down, it isn't actually big enough for that. So, yeah, bigger. And I've decided that once I finish the cord for my sewing sack, I'm probably hang it on the outside of my satchel, since there isn't much room at all inside right now.

I don't know if I've mentioned that I have a new plan for shirts. I love having all kinds of fun shirts with neat stuff on them, but I also have found that a lot of the cool decorations are kind of lost under my bag and vest or jacket. And they might take a whole lot of work, which doesn't last terribly long. So, I'm thinking instead of just making a series of astronomy-based shirts with a constellation with the stars embroidered with names and correct relative sizes and colors on black, blue, or purple shirts, and nature-themed shirts with leaves (or birds, fish, whatever) appliqued with some minimal embroidery on dark brown, dark green, or navy blue shirts. (The shirt colors for nature themes will need to be discussed with Joel, as I don't really know what looks good on me.) Those won't take a million years, will be interesting and educational for me, and will give me a never-ending set of similar-looking shirts that I can make.

There are a few shirts that are getting close to retirement age, so I'll need to think about this, but I'd also really like to make the satchel and another vest before fall. I'm making a lot more progress on the embroidery for my Mass Effect shirt, which was looking like it would take forever. So, I'm really happy about that.

One of the guys from the construction company came today to check out the stone wall that needs work on the side of the house. He wanted to take the stones from my garden for the wall, but I said I needed them, so he's going to find other ones. I hope. The landscaper has been looking for stone with no luck. So, anyway, we'll see. The contractor also said that someone would come by in a few days to work on the bathroom. It was funny, as the contractor felt that my Portuguese was pretty good (it isn't that good, but my pronunciation is good, which makes it seem like I am much better than I am) and thought that I was better at it than Joel. I'm not. However, I had to explain that I just talk more than Joel in general. I'm dithering about asking the landscaper if she does stuff like removing weeds along our wall or if she knows someone who could. Sometimes the city takes care of it, but I feel like they are pretty out of control. But there are so many things that need to be done. Ugh.

Anyway, I also got a bit more sewing done on the shirts and cut out a bag and lining that I can work on while going to and from neurofeedback on Wednesday.

The newest painting I'm working on is going well. I did some very pretty zentangle all around the edge to make an oval frame. Tomorrow, I need to paint some flowers in the middle. If I can get it to work out, that will wrap up this piece. I'll do something very similar for the next one, but instead of painting flowers, I'll paint a wild strawberry plant, since my friend grows them.
lillilah: (Default)
I finished up the podcast, and a lot of the rest of the stuff on my to do list isn't super ultra pressing, so I think I'm going to finish sewing some trim onto one of my t-shirts. Maybe tomorrow I'll be able to finish up the two shirts that are hanging around half finished. It looks like the fabric store will be open on Saturday, so I'll try to swing by there to see what they have.
lillilah: (Default)
Well, I'm probably a bit late to this, but Tales From The Gas Station is pretty amazing. It is a web story that was made into books. It is like a cross between old Stephen King and Dungeon Crawler Carl or maybe Murderbot. A great twist just showed up.

In other news, the kumihimo weaving has gotten to the end of several bobbins. I'm pleased with it and interested to see how things work out with it.
